What is keyword cannibalisation?
Keyword cannibalisation occurs when multiple pages on your site target the same keyword, causing them to compete against each other in search results. This confuses Google and dilutes your authority across pages that would be more powerful if consolidated.
Why does it matter?
When multiple pages compete for the same keyword, Google can struggle to determine which page to rank. This often results in all the competing pages ranking lower than a single consolidated page would.
How to fix it
Identify the strongest page for the keyword (usually the one with the most backlinks or traffic). Consolidate the content from weaker pages into the strongest, then 301 redirect the merged pages to the canonical URL.
Prevention
Before creating new content, check your existing pages to ensure you are not duplicating keyword targeting. Use a clear content strategy with distinct keyword focus for each page.
